Day 219 –
Why do we listen when the world speaks but not when God talks?
Jeremiah 35:16 “The descendants of Jehonadab son of Rekab have carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not obeyed me.’
First things first, even if you’ve never audibly heard God speak, everyone can read God’s spoken Word. His Word alone is proof that not following Him because we don’t know ‘His will’ is inexcusable. Why then, do we not fear God if we have the opportunity to know who He is and what His Word says? Yet we so easily follow the world when it continues to speak lies.
Jeremiah 36:24 “The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.”
You see, this isn’t a new problem. Listening to the lies of the world instead of listening to the Word of God has been a problem since the beginning of time.
Think back to the very beginning….God told Adam what to do and what not to do, but Adam listened to others and brought sin to us all.
So, why do we do what we shouldn’t do, but don’t do what we should do? Why do we listen to the wrong words when we have the Right Word available to us?
Maybe it’s a way of fitting in….so easily listening and obeying the rules of the world and agreeing with its free spirited opinions. Or maybe it’s because we find it easier…..with more options and more paths, doing whatever your heart desires. But Here’s the Truth of the matter: there is only one Word of God but there are many words of the world. And with many words we can get sidetracked, mislead, and totally fooled into hurting ourselves and others.
God on the other hand, speaks to us through His Word to give us direction out of His love for us.
There have been many times in my life when I’ve had to make a decision because I didn’t feel settled in what I was currently doing. In those moments and seasons, I knew with all of my heart what God wanted me to do, but I wanted the approval of others words to confirm what He had already told me. Sadly, the world around us doesn’t always want what God wants for us due to selfishness, insecurity, and competition. And Consequently, many of the things God has asked of me and probably you as well, have been placed on a shelf for “one day” or thrown in the trash for “never-land” because we’ve listened to others instead of Listening In to Him.
It’s a hard battle, I must confess. The whispers of the world can feel so satisfying and the world can make you feel like they love you and want the best for you. However, we must remember, sin is in the world and there’s only One that is Always looking out for your Good.
The words of the world, created by evil intent, aren’t meant to prosper us at all. Actually, the one who brought this evil about would love for us to follow them so we WILL fail, fall, struggle, and hopefully, eventually, turn our back on God.
The decision is yours. The choices are there. We can “Listen In” to The Word and find Joy and Peace or we can listen to the world and find hurt and pain.
Who will you listen to?
