Day 266 –
Serving comes before being served and Humility comes before honor.
Matthew 20:26-28 “Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Why do you do what you do? Are you working hard so that you can become great? Are you striving so that you will be seen as First?
Jesus SHOWS us HOW to be the best we can by laying down our lives for others and serving others before we serve ourselves.
The world, on the other hand, teaches us, to be best, we must be First and to be First we must leave others in our dust by thinking of ourselves above them.
From the time a child is mobile they are told to be first, to win the race at all costs, to always get out ahead, and to be number ONE. As the child grows these ideals are continually enforced until they reach adulthood. In the meantime, they’ve lost great friendships and family relationships all because they were told to be better than those around them.
Our world could look extremely different if we would teach our children how to model Christ’s example by living a life full of humility. If we would look in the mirror of Christ’s love and not forget what we saw, we could be an example for them and lead by loving others.
This example can look like lifting up and encouraging others, even when they are in competition with you. We can seek out ways of helping others instead of being helped, we can lay down our ego and selfish desires of being “One-upped” by encouraging others when they do something Great.
The world has Jesus’ command all backwards, living out life opposite of what He has asked.
He came to serve instead of being served. He did His best not to BE the BEST but instead He focused on the best work of His Father in Heaven. He won the war not because He fought the Hardest, but because He laid down His life for all of us.
Don’t live out your life to BE the BEST, live your life the BEST you can so that Christ is Honored in all you do. When we humble ourselves He will lift us up.
Loving others in this way is the ONLY way we can become Great in the eyes of the only one that Matters!
