Day 273 –
When we feel completely out of place, we may be right where God wants us and needs us.
Luke 2:7 “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”
You would think God would want His Son to be born in a comfy bed where Mary could rest her head with Joseph coaching her through the delivery. Instead, you find Mary and Joseph on the road to register their family along with thousands of others.
These “parents to-be” arrive in a “one-stop-sign” kind of small town with not enough beds for the number of people visiting.
The local innkeeper is out of rooms, but sympathizes with the largely pregnant woman and places them in a stable with a feeding trough to deliver the child that would be the world’s Messiah.
This birthing situation was not ideal and definitely not comfortable, rightly giving Mary the opportunity to feel completely out of place.
Mary had already found herself impregnated by the Holy Spirit with the Son of God, unmarried but engaged, and no one had room for her to deliver this child?! Was this just a really bad dream?
Yet the shepherds out in the field had already heard of the Messiah’s birth and were on their way, seeking the promised one. What better a place for a common shepherd to find the babe but in a stable made for animals instead of a 5-star Resort for the elite.
Even Mary made the best of her current circumstances and stored up all these things in her heart.
Luke 2:19 “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
We can often find ourselves in situations or periods of time where we just don’t feel like we fit in. Maybe, we think, God has got this whole thing wrong, this isn’t where I’m supposed to be! Maybe we feel as though we didn’t pray enough or wait long enough to hear the right answer.
It’s in these times, where we feel most uncomfortable, that God has His greatest plan for us and can use us in a Mighty way.
God sees our circumstances in a different light, as an opportunity to magnify His love. He may have placed us near others who are currently hurting and helpless, and He’s positioning our life in a way to relate to theirs. God could be placing us in another place to grow us and prepare us for a future assignment He has planned and He needs us to be ready for whatever that looks like.
Whatever the reason for the uncomfortable place we find ourselves in, the one thing that is for sure, God knew we would be here, He sees us and is with us, and will never leave us or forsake us.
I haven’t chosen a lot of the places I’ve found myself in, and if it were my choice would never have chosen the circumstance. However, looking back, I wouldn’t change any of the circumstances either. Each one has grown me, prepared me, and allowed my heart to grown more compassionate for others and more passionate for my Lord and Savior and my Heavenly Father!
Where do you find yourself? Are you uncomfortable in your current place? Be ready, God is preparing you for something Great!
